I'm a student that likes to code! I am the creator of Feline Strike, and do pretty much everything by myself, including developing and marketing.

Get Ready For a Massive Upgrade!

I’m sure you have all noticed a lack of recent activity on the website and the store. I haven’t updated the app since early last year! But I assure you that a big upgrade is in the works!

Feline Strike LogoI am now in college and that has been a significant change of pace. I started this project in high school but continued with it until now. It has been an enjoyable experience, and the wait will be worth it. I have been spending the time getting the game certified through the ID@Xbox progam. As you may have noticed, this new logo with the Xbox watermark has been showing up on some recent pages, as I am getting very close to release. While I can’t make any promises, you can be sure it will be in Q1 of 2018.

So What’s New in the Upgrade?

A lot. This upgrade includes not just Xbox Live features, but numerous game improvements. For some perspective, I have made over two hundred individual changes since the last version, according to my source control. Here are a few notable examples:

New Navigation System

As I mentioned in one of my previous posts, there is an entirely new map system. It uses a new hexagonal system instead of the old square system, which is not only more useful, it looks way more awesome.

Another nice feature is the transit network that becomes available after you finish the main storyline. For a small fee, you can use the network to shoot you across the galaxy over a network of connected trade routes. This is very handy and makes travelling long distances a whole lot easier.

Updated Everything

There is not a single part of the game that has gone without an upgrade. There are three new ships, all of which are specialized or upper level, so you have more ships to grow into! I have improved many issues with navigation, weapons, controls, scanning, and AI. All of the NPC ships in the game have a new AI program, so you will likely notice that they will be a little harder to kill and will be more realistic with their actions. They also have the ability to boost, and some will even be able to cloak!

Xbox Live Features

Last but certainly not least, is Xbox Live functionality. You will now have the full host of features that you always hoped you have: achievements, stats, and leaderboards. All of the gamesaves and settings will sync with your Xbox Live account, so you can play across all your devices. As of right now, the game will still only be available on Windows 10 desktop and mobile, but I hope that an Xbox One version may be in the cards. There are no plans to implement multiplayer right now, but that may change in the future.

Well, I hope you all had a great new years and enjoyed this update. Remember, the big release is coming soon!

First Look at New and Improved Map

Its been a long time since I have posted here, but the reason is that I have been very bust working on other projects as well as making some HUGE changes to Feline Strike. Here is a first look at the new map system that will be coming soon.

Square versus Hexagonal Map

At first, square maps seem to be easer to deal with because it makes the math easy. The only problem is that someone can move a lot faster in the game if they simply move diagonally across the map. Hexagonal maps fix this. The distances are now equal navigating in either direction.

Thanks to Red Blob Game’s tutorial, working the math was not too difficult. Most of it is done for you in the tutorial, and it required little effort to convert the hex system. I didn’t have to change any of the storage information because the only thing that had to be changed was the rendering code.

That’s not the only thing that has changed. I’m also working on improved map animations and a selection system that lets you select a system and see information on that system. I want to also add an autopilot to navigate across multiple systems. Pretty cool, eh? All in good time.

Although I’m still actively working on it, the new map system will be much improved from the last version. I hope you will enjoy the new changes. Happy exploring!

Update Adds Global Achievements

Mining a Titanium Asteroid

Version 1.5.0 of Feline Strike has been released which includes global achievements for the game and adds additional improvements.

Game Achievements

The first major addition is global achievements, which in the near future will replace medals within the game. The section that currently displays medal for the player will soon be replaced with a storyline description. Then you can see where you are in the storyline.

Why is this happening? Because these achievements work better with platforms that use game achievements and leaderboards. Now I can integrate these services into the game.

Check out the descriptions and let me know if you have any ideas for more achievements!

Improved Survival Mode

The survival mode has been updated to make it easier. Sort of. Now fewer enemies spawn in each wave. Now it is a little easier to survive more waves.

Updated Education System

By default, when you install a new item type, like a booster or cloak, the game shows you how to use that new module. However, those hints only showed how to use the keyboard or mouse. Now they will show how to do it in the mobile version with mobile-specific instructions.

New Difficulty Levels

Easy, Normal, and Hard seemed too generic. So I changed the names to Normal, Veteran, and Heroic to add a little more originality into the game. (Hat tip to HALO!)

I hope you enjoy the new additions to the game in this version and I will keep you updated for more changes that will be coming very soon!

Windows 10 Mobile Now Supported

wp_ss_20151107_0012

Feline Strike version 1.4 includes support for the newly released Windows 10 Mobile, as well as some improvements and new features. Although Feline Strike could be downloaded onto Windows 10 phones before this release, it had not been tested and some bugs were present.

New Integrations and Controls

Feline Strike will now administer ads when docking at a station, if you are playing the trial version. But, I have expanded the universe to include a little more storyline in the trial version. I am using AdDuplex, which is an awesome platform to freely market your game by showing ads in your apps.

Also, Feline Strike has been built for the new Windows 10 build, and is running a newer version of MonoGame, the framework that it runs on. The previous version had a problem with input devices, but now that’s fixed. So, I’ve added gamepad and joystick support. The new content manager is also more efficient at compressing assets, so the game size is smaller and the memory usage has been reduced a bit.

Fixes for Mobile Devices

The main error was an incorrect screen size sensing. This caused the UI elements to be out of place and obscured the users view of other controls. This problem only occurred in the mobile version and has been resolved with the new version.

Hope you enjoy the new changes and support, and I’ll see you next time.

Aran and Chimera Stations Open For Business

Warpgate

Version 1.3.1 is now available on Windows 10, and it includes the new Aran and Chimera stations, which are sure to pique your interest with new markets and special abilities.

The Chimera Black Market

First off, the Chimera system is host to a black market, where you can get almost anything. It will be at a a higher price though, since it is the black market. The system is run by pirates, but they don’t mind you if you just ignore them and go about your business. Although the system has a tech level of eight, you can actually buy items above that level.

The Aran Church Station

The other system in the outer reaches is the Aran station. This station is home to a pastor who also happens to own a special warpgate. You can use it to travel to anywhere in the galaxy. This is especially helpful when you buy a ship at Chimera, because you can still leave the system using this gate.

I hope you like what I have so far, and let me know if there are any other features you would like to see. You can always use the feedback page to get in touch.

Now Available for Just $2.99!

Split view of Map and Store

Feline Strike is now available for just $2.99 on the Windows Store! I decided to lower the price so that people aren’t scared away by the price. That way, more people can enjoy it!

New Features Available In This Version

Copperhead mining shipAlso, I’ve included some much anticipated changes in this update. First of all, you can now buy in-game credits through in-app purchases. You can do this by going to the settings menu while docked at a station. At the moment, you can buy $50,000, $100,000, and $500,000 credits from the store.

Most of the other improvements are minor, like miscellaneous bug fixes. I have done some more work on the Copperhead mining ship though. The ship has additional engines down on the container arms, which were not included in the last version but which are included now.

What’s Next?

Right now I’m pretty busy with school, so don’t expect too much too soon. However, I have already started working on the Aran and Chimera systems, which appear as outlaw systems on the outside of the map. This will be available soon.

Hope you guys are enjoying what I’ve got so far, and be prepared for some more cool stuff and add-ons coming to Feline Strike, as soon as I get some time for it!

New Version Released with New Ship!

Mining a Titanium Asteroid

I’ve just released version 1.2.1 and I have some goodies for you! This update fixes some persistent problems that you have reported and includes some much desired improvements. Specifically, the job board had some problems that have now been resolved.

New Ship Dedicated to Mining

Also added is a new, shiny dedicated mining ship, called the Copperhead. What makes it special is its unique mining yield bonus of 65%, which means you can get a ton of ore from a single asteroid. On top of that, there is a significant bonus to cargo compressors, which is helpful for obvious reasons. It also looks awesome!

This new ship is going to be great for the veteran miner, as its price is a little prohibitive for beginners. Nevertheless, I hope you will enjoy using it as I did making it!

Android Development Underway

Destroying a Cruiser

Now that Feline Strike has been released on Windows 10 desktop and mobile, I am turning my attention to developing the Android version.

Prepping the Android Version

Thanks to the folks at Xamarin, porting to Android will not be enormously painful. For those of you who don’t know Xamarin is a cross-platform development solution that uses C# and the Microsoft .NET framework. This allows app developers like myself to write code only once, and be able to reuse most of it.

In any event, the Android version should be available within the next two months, and I will like launch it side-by-side with the Windows 10 Mobile version.

What Changes Need to Be Made?

The vast majority of work will be to make sure all of the features work properly on the Android platform. Specifically, anything that requires interfacing with the low-level APIs of the OS. This would include gamesaves, music, and especially graphical assets like models and textures.

Another issue to consider is device performance. First off, Feline Strike will only be available on Android version 4.4 and higher, so this will cut out a lot of low-end devices on which performance could be a major problem.

Hope that doesn’t disappoint any of you who have cheaper devices, but I will not be restricting it to any technical requirements, just the OS version. So, I’m giving you the benefit of the doubt so if you want to try, go right ahead!
